Frequently Asked Questions

Therapy questions, answered.

Clear information about getting started, neurodivergent care, caregiver and couples support, virtual sessions, fees, and insurance.

Getting started

How do I get started?

Book a free 30-minute consultation. We’ll chat, see if we click, and go from there. No awkward commitment required.

Do I need a referral?

Nope. You can book directly without getting anyone’s permission.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes! It’s 30 minutes, virtual, and completely free.

What happens during the consultation?

You tell me a little about what’s going on, I explain how I work, and we see if it feels like a good fit.

What happens in the first session?

We’ll talk about what brought you to therapy and what you hope will change. You do not need to unpack your entire life story in 60 minutes.

What if I don’t know what I want to work on?

That’s completely okay. “I just know something needs to change” is a perfectly good place to start.

How often will we meet?

Usually weekly or biweekly, depending on your needs, schedule, and budget. Therapy should fit into your life, not take it over.

How long will I need therapy?

It depends. Some people come for a specific issue, while others stay longer. There is no therapy stopwatch ticking in the background.

What if I’m nervous?

Totally normal. Starting therapy can feel a bit like a first date, except you get to talk about yourself the whole time.

Neurodivergence and diagnosis

Do I need a formal autism or ADHD diagnosis?

Nope. Formally diagnosed, self-identified, questioning, or deep into a three-hour research rabbit hole, you’re welcome here.

Do you provide autism or ADHD assessments?

No. I provide psychotherapy, but I do not complete formal diagnostic assessments.

Can we explore whether I might be neurodivergent?

Absolutely. We can explore your experiences and support needs, but I cannot provide a formal diagnosis.

What does neuro-affirming therapy mean?

It means we are not trying to “fix” your brain. We’re figuring out how to support it.

Do you work with autistic adults?

Yes. Autistic adults are a major focus of my practice.

Do you work with adults with ADHD?

Yes! We can work on emotional regulation, burnout, executive functioning, relationships, and the 47 tabs currently open in your brain.

Do you work with AuDHD?

Yes. If you need routine but also immediately become bored by routine, you are in good company.

Can therapy help with autistic burnout?

Yes. We can look at masking, sensory needs, overwhelming demands, boundaries, and how to recover without adding “recover from burnout” to your to-do list.

Can we talk about masking?

Definitely. Therapy can be a place to explore who you are underneath all the expectations and carefully rehearsed social scripts.

Do you support people with intellectual disabilities?

Yes, when virtual psychotherapy fits the person’s needs, goals, and preferred way of communicating.

Caregiver support

Do you work with caregivers?

Absolutely. Caregivers are my bread and butter, my niche, and where my passion truly lies. As a parent of a child with complex special needs, I understand what it feels like to love fiercely, advocate constantly, and carry a whole lot behind the scenes.

Can therapy be about me instead of the person I support?

Please let it be about you! You deserve support too, even if you are used to being the one holding everything together.

What can caregivers talk about in therapy?

Burnout, guilt, grief, stress, advocacy fatigue, relationships, resentment, boundaries, and the mental load nobody else seems to notice.

Can you help with school-related challenges?

Yes. We can organize your thoughts, prepare for meetings, strengthen your advocacy skills, and process the stress of constantly having to fight for support.

Can you help with caregiver burnout?

Absolutely. You cannot pour from an empty cup, especially when someone has taken the cup, lost the lid, and spilled juice on the floor.

Will you judge my parenting or caregiving?

Nope. You are doing your best in circumstances that are often genuinely hard.

Can you help with behavioural concerns?

Yes. We’ll look beneath the behaviour to understand what may be communicated, needed, avoided, or overwhelmed.

Can you help me set boundaries?

Yes. We can work on saying no, tolerating the guilt afterward, and resisting the urge to send a five-paragraph apology.

Do you only work with neurodivergence?

Not at all! I also support clients with anxiety, depression, postpartum concerns, women’s issues, divorce, life transitions, codependency, enmeshment, and children’s school or behavioural challenges. Take a look at my other areas of support to see if what you’re going through fits, and if you’re unsure, just ask!

Couples therapy

Do you see couples for therapy?

Yes! I have completed Gottman Level 1 training and will soon be starting Level 2. I’ve supported multiple couples and genuinely enjoy understanding the bigger picture while helping partners balance different personalities, communication styles, and needs. Every couple has their own unique dynamic, and that is what makes the work so interesting!

My approach

What approaches do you use?

I draw from CBT, emotion-focused, attachment-based, narrative, person-centred, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy. Basically, I have more than one tool in the toolbox.

What is CBT?

CBT looks at how thoughts, emotions, and behaviours affect one another. It is more than someone telling you to “just think positively.” I promise.

Do you use the same approach with everyone?

No. You are a person, not a therapy template.

Is therapy just talking?

It can include talking, reflection, practical strategies, worksheets, visual tools, or exercises.

Will you give me strategies to try?

Yes, if you want them. I aim for realistic strategies, not a 14-step morning routine starting at 5:00 a.m.

What are you like as a therapist?

Warm, genuine, practical, and straightforward. I’ll validate you, laugh with you, and gently challenge you when needed.

Do you have lived experience with neurodivergence?

Yes. My work is shaped by both professional experience and lived experience within my family. I truly understand that real life does not always follow the textbook.

Virtual therapy

Are sessions virtual?

Yes. All sessions are virtual for clients located in Ontario. Comfy pants are fully acceptable.

How long are sessions?

I offer 60-minute and 90-minute sessions, depending on your needs and how much ground you want to cover.

What do I need for virtual therapy?

A phone, tablet, or computer, a stable internet connection, and as much privacy as your household will realistically allow.

What if I hate being on camera?

Tell me. We can discuss your comfort, accessibility needs, and what helps you communicate best.

Fees and billing

How much does therapy cost?

A 60-minute session is $160. Additional appointment options and fees are available through the booking page.

Is therapy covered by insurance?

It may be. Every insurance plan has its own rules because apparently simplicity was not invited to the meeting. Check whether your plan covers services provided by an RP (Qualifying).

What is your cancellation policy?

Please provide at least 24 hours’ notice. Late cancellations and missed appointments may be charged because, unfortunately, “my brain forgot” does not make the time slot reappear.
